You Are the Chef: Savory Stuffed Bell Peppers

Welcome back to the “You Are the Chef” series! Today, we’re diving into the world of hearty and delicious ingredients with an all-time classic: hamburger meat. Our feature for the evening is Savory Stuffed Bell Peppers—a delightful dish that’s as comforting as it is flavorsome. Let’s embark on this culinary adventure!

For the Stuffed Bell Peppers:

  • 4 large bell peppers (any color)
  • 1 lb ground hamburger meat
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or any cheese of your choice)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For Garnish (optional):

  • Fresh parsley, chopped
  • Sour cream

  1. Preparation of Bell Peppers: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the tops off the bell peppers and remove the seeds and membranes. Lightly season the insides with salt and set aside.
  2. Cook the Hamburger Mixture: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add the hamburger meat, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned. Stir in the drained diced tomatoes, paprika, oregano, and cooked rice. Season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stuff the Bell Peppers: Evenly distribute the hamburger mixture into each of the prepared bell peppers. Place the stuffed peppers upright in a baking dish. If they have trouble standing, you can trim a thin slice off the bottom of the pepper to help it stand straight.
  4. Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the foil, sprinkle the tops of the peppers with the shredded cheese, and return them to the oven. Bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve: Plate the stuffed bell peppers, garnishing with chopped fresh parsley and a dollop of sour cream if desired.

Nutritional Highlights:

  • Hamburger Meat: A great source of protein and essential nutrients, including B vitamins, iron, and zinc.
  • Bell Peppers: Rich in vitamins A and C, bell peppers add a natural sweetness and are a great source of antioxidants.

Chef’s Tips:

  1. Variations: Feel free to add other ingredients to the mixture, like black beans, corn, or even some hot sauce for a kick!
  2. Cheese Choices: While cheddar is recommended, feel free to substitute with Monterey Jack, mozzarella, or any other melting cheese you prefer.

Bon appétit, chefs! This dish promises a delightful combination of flavors, textures, and the heartiness you crave. Remember, in the kitchen, You Are the Chef! Enjoy your meal and the satisfaction of creating it!
